First Gear's performance at Otaki on Friday earned a pass mark from trainer Stephen Gray, despite a racing map that went against him from the jump. After being trapped three-wide without cover for much of the 1200m journey, the gelding showed heart to keep finding under pressure.

The way he laid in over the final stages suggests he has reached his top-end speed at the sprint trips and is now looking for more ground to use his action.
