First Gear Set for Otaki Return
Race report from the Evolution Stables stable

First Gear has come through his recent racing assignment in good order, with trainer Stephen Gray reporting that the gelding is doing well since the run and appears bright in himself.
Looking back at his performance on 22 November, it was a pivotal turning point for his maturity. Despite a tricky trip where he was caught three-wide early and had to work hard to find cover, he stuck to the task and hit the line impressively. The strategy to ride him quietly paid off; he was more relaxed and happier, and raced genuinely on the good track compared to previous outings.
While there was a brief discussion about stepping him up to 1400m immediately, jockey Bruno Queiroz felt the horse learned from the experience but advised staying at the sprint distance is the better move right now.
The plan is set for the Rating 65 over 1200m at Otaki on 19 December. The timing places him just before Christmas with enough time to freshen up afterwards.
